Transcripts of articles by Joel Wakeman which appeared in the Prattsburgh (New York) News in 1898. The articles were about the Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and Henry Harmon and Eliza Spalding. The articles were transcribed by Clifford Drury for his book on Spalding. He also transcribed Wakeman's obituary, which also appeared in 1898.

Joel Wakeman, minister, was born in Rhinebeck, New York and moved to Prattsburgh where he apprenticed to a wheelwright. In 1832, he converted to the Presbyterian church and entered the Franklin Academy where he became a strong temperance advocate and abolitionist. Reverend Henry Harmon Spalding, pioneer Presbyterian missionary in the Oregon Territory, was born on November 26, 1803 in New York. In 1836, after successfully applying for an appointment under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Spalding traveled overland to Oregon with his first wife, Eliza Hart Spalding, and Marcus and Narcissa Whitman.
